Fitness Without Tears: Radically Reimagining Health of Body, Mind, and Spirit
I’m Ellen Jaffe Jones and I am a best-selling author as well as a high-achieving athlete. As both a sprinter and a marathoner (you can read about my up-to-date accomplishments here), many people might assume that I’ve always been an avid athlete, but that is not the case. With a mother, aunt, and two sisters who developed breast cancer, though, I’ve always been concerned about my own health risks. When my family became part of the original breast cancer gene studies, it became crystal clear just how sick we were and how the odds were not in my favor. Doctors told me from a young age, “Do things differently or you’re going to end up like everybody else in your family.” Those were scary but important words to hear.
As the youngest in my family, I spent my childhood watching so many others suffer in pain and die. Our family would joke, “Which hospital will our family reunion be at next year?” Or, “We have the sickest family in America.” It really wasn’t funny. Entire generations lose each other and don’t even realize it. I thought, there must be a better way. I wanted to be around for my daughters in a way my parents could have never been. I started my path of pursuing optimal health out of a deep desire to live a long and robust life, and my own brush with a life-threatening colon blockage at age 28 certainly lit a fire within me as well. It wasn’t always a straight and narrow path, and when I fell off the wagon, I was facing a hysterectomy at 52. Once again, I realized what I needed to do and averted that train wreck.
As an Emmy-award winning investigative reporter for nearly 20 years, I am trained to read the latest information and apply an investigator’s research skills to separate fact from fiction. With this mindset, and as the mother of three children, I wanted to live a long, healthy life and my research led me down the path of adopting a plant-based diet. My passion for running emerged as well. Today, I am proud to say that as a very active senior citizen, I have remained injury-free and performing better every year. This is not supposed to happen in our 60s. I believe that this is because I’ve applied what I’ve learned to my own fitness approach: adapting, honing, and improving as I see fit.
What I have learned over the years, along with my own experiences as an athlete, has inspired me to develop a program that can help anyone achieve their own health goals and with that, Fitness Without Tears was born. As a longtime competitive athlete, I see with my own eyes that many athletes suffer painful injuries that are preventable, injuries that can quash fitness aspirations, as well as even impair general mobility and quality of life. As an eager researcher and learner, I have been able to maintain my busy schedule of competitive running and fitness training without injuries by applying what I have learned to how I train, perform, and recover. Further, as someone who believes genuine encouragement is a far better motivator than shaming. I have developed Fitness Without Tears to be a research-based but experiential program that doesn’t apply cruel or manipulative tactics to inspire positive change. Life is hard enough! Fitness Without Tears takes its tagline to heart: Because You Don’t Need to be Torn Down to Be Built Up. With the FWT program, there will be no abuse of the body or spirit.
